Inspirational baby who survived Haitian earthquake dies

A sick baby that survived the devastating Haiti earthquake has died.

Baby Grace was being cared for at Maison de Benediction, in Haiti, which was set up by Surbiton couple Carwyn and Reninca Hill.

She had become a beacon of hope in the aftermath of the disaster and was much-loved in the children’s home.

Mrs Hill visited Grace on January 25, where she was told the baby was sick and undergoing tests.

The following day, Grace had a seizure and stopped breathing.

Mrs Hill said: “I just stood there watching it all unravel in front of me, helping where I could. There were four doctors working on her little body, taking it in turns giving compressions and breaths.

“After 15 minutes they all agreed to stop trying. The American doctors told me she had died and they could not revive her. She was just lying there, her little body gone.

“The staff from Maison de Benediction were inconsolable as our little ray of sunshine has been taken away.”

A service is being held for Grace on Sunday, February 5, for close family and friends.
