Hundreds caught watching TV without licence

TV Licensing revealed more than 240 people were caught watching TV without a valid licence in Kingston last year.

The figure is significantly higher than the 100 licence-evaders caught in Walton, 100 in Sunbury and 80 in Epsom during the same period.

While the majority of people, 19 out of 20 households and businesses, are correctly licensed, those who are not face penalty fines of up to £1,000 and prosecution.

Pauline Gillingham, TV Licensing spokeswoman for the south-east, said: “We are committed to tackling evasion and enforcing the law among the small minority, who should pay, but don’t. It is only fair.

“People are given every opportunity to pay, but if they fail to do so and watch television illegally, we will seek a prosecution.”

A TV licence costs £145.50 and can be paid for in various ways, including direct debit and a weekly or monthly cash payment plan. Visit tvlicensing.co.uk for more information.
